From transit map to real commute: the journey between the lines

A station symbol is only the start. Compare frequency, transfers, operating hours, access and the complete journey before judging a neighbourhood’s transport value.

Connectivity is a service, not a coloured line

A transit map shows how a network connects. It usually cannot tell you the complete cost in time and effort of reaching a particular destination on a particular day. Our proposed commute audit starts with two actual addresses and a required arrival time. Include the walk to the stop, waiting, boarding, interchange movement, the second wait and the final approach.

Transport for London’s Public Transport Accessibility Levels, described in the UK government’s data catalogue, incorporate walking access and service frequency. The principle matters beyond London: proximity and service availability belong together. A nearby stop with a sparse service and a slightly farther stop with frequent departures can offer very different practical access.

Test the transfer, not just the vehicle

For an invented illustration, suppose Route A takes 25 minutes on vehicles, plus two eight-minute walks and a four-minute wait: 45 minutes altogether. Route B promises 20 minutes on vehicles, two five-minute walks and two five-minute waits: 40 minutes. If its connection is missed and the next departure is 20 minutes later, that particular trip becomes 60 minutes. These are hypothetical journey components, not measured performance or probabilities.

The lesson is to inspect the connection and its alternatives. Does the interchange require stairs, a road crossing or movement between distant platforms? What happens when the first service arrives late? A quicker scheduled itinerary can be a poor fit for someone whose arrival deadline leaves little tolerance for uncertainty. Do not claim that it is less reliable without performance evidence.

Plan for the rider who will use it

TfL’s accessible journey planner offers preferences including fewer changes, less walking and step access. TransLink’s new-rider guidance likewise asks passengers to consider walking distances, transfer points, fares and disruption information. These operator resources support a broader audit than counting stations. They do not establish that every route is accessible or that live predictions will always match actual departures.

Check the return journey separately. A route that works for an office arrival may not support an early shift, an evening class or a late flight. Consult the dated timetable and relevant service alerts. Verify fare zones, payment methods and transfer rules directly with the operator rather than carrying assumptions from another city.

Publish a journey profile readers can reproduce

A useful profile states the origin and destination, day type, departure window, direction, walking assumptions, accessibility settings and schedule date. Show a typical scheduled option and a practical fallback without presenting either as a statistical average. If you sample real trips, disclose the sample size and observed conditions; one smooth ride is not a reliability study.

For city comparison, separate coverage, frequency, access and reliability instead of hiding all four behind a single appealing map. For a traveller, the fallback might be a different bus or a shorter itinerary. For a prospective resident, it might determine whether a household can realistically avoid a car. Transport value is the set of useful journeys a network enables, with the time and constraints made visible.
